Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said being dragged out of the European Union would be disastrous for workers’ rights.

Ms Anderson said;

“Ahead of the EU referendum I warned that British Tories were planning a bonfire of human and workers rights.

“The very fact that one of the contenders for the Tory leadership, Andrea Leadsom, has previously called for the scrapping of workers’ rights in small businesses shows what an unchecked Tory government would look like.

“This Conservative Cabinet of millionaires want to abolish maternity leave, abandon restrictions on long working hours and abandon certain rights and workers’ consultation by employers, especially redundancy pay.

“In the past I have used the EU institutions and EU workers rights to secure a better deal for workers in Derry who were facing redundancy. That avenue would be lost if we are dragged out of the EU.

“The people of the North voted to remain in the EU, complete with its protections for workers rights, and that vote must be respected.” Ends/Críoch
