Sinn Féin will stop 40 shades of green turning to 50 shades of gray – Anderson

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said Sinn Féin will block any attempts to carry out controversial fracking in the North.

Speaking at the launch of a major international fracking conference in Fermanagh this morning, Ms Anderson said;

“If an application is made to drill a test well to carry out fracking anywhere in the North of Ireland such an application would require full planning permission which would make it an Executive matter.

“That takes it out of the hands of supporters of fracking and puts the decision in the safe hands of Sinn Féin ministers who will block it.

“Be assured, Sinn Féin will use its voting strength in the Executive to block fracking.

“Sinn Féin has been to the fore in the campaign against fracking, not just in Fermanagh, but across Ireland.

“For many years now my concern has been that fracking could turn the fields of Ireland from 40 shades of green to 50 shades of gray.

“It would have the potential to damage valuable agricultural land with cropland polluted with groundwater contaminated with methane.

“I am the only MEP from the North who has consistently opposed exploration and exploitation of hydraulic fracking and have voted consistently in favour of mandatory environmental impact assessments.

“Sinn Féin will continue to oppose fracking and to support communities that are opposed to this controversial and unsafe process.”
