Welcoming the Ballyhea Campaign Group to the EU Parliament Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson said:
“It was a privilege for me to welcome this group of anti-austerity protesters from Ballyhea, County Cork to Brussels. The purpose of their trip to Brussels was to present a petition to the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament.
“The petition highlights the anger that exists among ordinary people at the EU’s role in causing potentially decades of austerity in Ireland through the negligence of EU institutions – including the European Central Bank (ECB), the EU Commission and Council.
“In order to ameliorate against the worst effects of the EU mishandling of the economic crisis Sinn Féin supports the group’s call on the ECB to write off the €28.1billion in sovereign bonds currently held by the Central Bank in lieu of the Promissory notes issued in 2010 to cover the €31bn pumped into two already insolvent institutions – Anglo Irish Bank and Irish Nationwide.
“Sinn Féin will continue to support the Ballyhea and other groups in peaceful protest against the injustice of the conditions imposed on Irish citizens by European Institutions. Martina Anderson MEP has sent the petition onto the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament urging that it be considered favourably.”
