MEP Anderson Hails Firmus Energy City of Derry Triathlon
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson who officiated at the launch of the event said :
“This is 2nd year for the city to have a triathlon – following on from its massive success in City of Culture year.
Once again it’s great to see our beautiful waterfront being used for such an occasion.
It’s another great positive for Derry coming just two weeks after the LegenDerry Maritime Festival.
There are 450 competitors taking part – Including relay teams.
There’s a great mix of all abilities – and age groups.
Our own great Tri-athlete Roisin Lynch (aged 65) Rosin has inspired women in Derry all of her adult life from the days when she taught children like me in St Cecilia’s – Roisin – you are an inspiration and this city is very proud of you.
The main sponsor of the event is Firmus Energy- and it’s also funded by Legacy –
Events like this need much support and with the faithful Foyle Search & Rescue – Foyle Paddlers & St Johns Ambulance on hand if needed.
The 450 Competitors will:
· Swim 750 metres of the Foyle – using the river positively shows a different side of it;
· That will be Followed by Biking the 2 Road Bridges – 21k; then
· They will run the beautiful walkway over the Iconic Peace Bridge and Back
Fair Play to all involved in organising it – to Paul McGilloway Race Director of this event which is organised by the North West Tri Club.
And events like this could not happen without the support of helpers and marshals who are here in their hundreds.
All of you 450 Competitors are winners for taking part – but one of you will be the best of the best – it could be any of you – so give it your all.
