Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has congratulated Fishery Minister Michelle O’Neill on her robust defence of the North’s fishing quota.
Martina Anderson said:
“Minister O’Neill deserves much credit following difficult negotiations in Brussels this week on the Common Fisheries Reform package.
“With the Commission proposing a huge reduction of 24% in the quota for Area VII prawns it was always going to be a difficult negotiation but through her determined efforts Minister O’Neill succeeded in reducing this to 9%.
“While it will still present some difficulties for fishing communities, faced with a situation where enough member states were in favour of accepting the overall package, I believe that the Minister’s achievement is commendable.”
