Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has expressed her relief as the imprisoned Palestinian journalist Mohammed al-Qeeq has reached an agreement with Israeli authorities, ending his 94 day hunger strike.
Ms Anderson said,
“Mohammed al-Qeeq ended his 94-day hunger strike today after reaching an agreement with the Israeli authorities.
“In the last few weeks Mohammad’s health has rapidly deteriorated, with his doctors declaring that he was dying, therefore I am relieved the Israeli authorities have taken an act of humanity and conceded to some of Mohammed’s demands.
“A written agreement was signed between al-Qeeq and the Israeli authorities and while it stipulates that he will continue seeking treatment at al-Afula Hospital, his family will now be allowed to visit him.
“Although Mohammad will continue to be held on ‘administration detention’, I am relieved that he will finally be set free to his wife and son on May 21st.
“While Israel has promised not to extend his detention beyond May, this is a form of unjust internment without trial that the Israeli authorities must immediately abolish.”ENDS
