Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has expressed sympathy to the victims of the latest migrant drowning tragedy in the Mediterranean and called for EU action to prevent repeat incidents.
Ms Anderson said;
“This latest tragedy off the coast of Lampedusa is both shocking and heartbreaking.
“The sheer scale of the human tragedy in the Mediterranean as migrants take huge risks and are exploited by modern-day slave traders is appalling.
“This loss of life is unacceptable and must be stopped.
“There is a responsibility on the European Union to take immediate action to end this ongoing tragedy and prevent the Mediterranean Sea becoming a mass cemetery.
“There is also an onus on British prime minister David Cameron to address the situation, given the actions of his government in creating the conditions for these migrants to take such huge risks by destroying Libyan society and their role in other global conflicts.
“There is an urgent need for action from the international community if we are to prevent further tragedies in the future.”
