Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed the announcement that Palestine will officially become a member of the International Criminal Court on April 1.
Ms Anderson, the chair of the EU’s Delegation to the Palestinian Legislative Council, said;
“I welcome the fact the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, has confirmed that Palestine will officially become a member of the International Criminal Court on April 1.
“This means the International Criminal Court, based in the Hague, would have jurisdiction over any and all war crimes committed by anyone on Palestinian territory, without a referral from the UN Security Council.
“As a result, Israeli citizens could be tried for actions committed on Palestinian land.
“Hopefully this is another step forward in the campaign for full international recognition of Palestinian statehood.”
