Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the Greek people have stood up for everyone in Europe opposed to austerity.

Speaking during a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Ms Anderson said;

“The brave Greek people asserted the primacy of democracy over the technocratic neoliberal order in Europe.

“Alexis Tsipras used the most powerful weapon in the world, democracy.

“Before, during and since Sunday’s decisive result, Syriza has upheld its democratic anti-austerity mandate while trying to seek agreement with its European partners.

“However, IMF creditors want to enforce Greek poverty and deprivation, refusing debt relief and investment.

“Even the IMF – no friend of the left – acknowledged that Greece needs debt relief.

“Despite hostility and interference from the European Parliament’s self-appointed director, Martin Schulz, or the shameful behaviour of the EU’s poster boy for austerity, Enda Kenny, the Greek people not only stood up for Greece; they also stood up for Ireland, Spain, Portugal and all of Europe; more than their own governments have done.”
