Discrimination must end against gay men giving blood – Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said discrimination against gay men donating blood must end throughout Europe.
Speaking during a hearing on human rights in Hungary at the European Parliament, Ms Anderson said;
“It’s clear that the Hungarian government is systemically discriminating against a number of minorities, such as the LGBTI community and the Roma community and has taken a regressive position on violence against women.
“In July 2014 the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that the ban on gay men donating blood was unjustifiable.
“This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed and of course it has particular relevance to our own situation in the north of Ireland.
“The ECJ has already ruled against this unjust ban. This discrimination must end in Ireland and in other parts of Europe.”
