Máire remains an inspiration to me and to thousands of Republicans across Ireland and the words and legacy of Máire encourage us in all the work that we do to achieve our ultimate goal of a United Ireland, as she said herself:visualcage

“We must take no steps backward, our steps must be onward, for if we don’t, the martyrs that died for you, for me, for this country will haunt us forever.”

This morning I addressed the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg, to speak directly to President Tusk, Juncker and Schulz on Brexit.

Farmers, SMEs, ESF Women’s Groups, PEACE Funding Vol & Community sector, ERASMUS young people, R&D universities, Foreign Direct Investment, construction workers, Cross border workers & students and many many more will be adversely affected.

The Democratic Unionist Party decision was reckless and it was wrong – it was a political football to get stronger tie with Britain, hard borders and damage to the all-Ireland economy – BREXIT is the cost of Partition. We can’t afford Partition.

This is my speech from the extraordinary plenary earlier today.

We stand by the vote of Ireland, which like Scotland voted Remain. We accept, respect and will defend the clear wishes of the people of the north of Ireland.

However, if English votes drag us out of the EU against our democratic will that is simply “Britannia waives the rules”

I tell you, the last thing that Ireland could tolerate would be an EU border with 27 Member States stuck right in the heart of it!

We in Sinn Féin have always been a vocal critical of the democratic deficit in the European Union – and we still are. However, a situation where part of our country is in the EU and the other part outside would cause huge problems in terms of the economy, free movement and have serious political consequences.

In this, the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, no nationalist or republican should play any part in reinforcing the partition of our country.

We are asking you to vote ‘Remain’ in the Brexit referendum

Sinn Féin MEP’s Martina Anderson, Matt Carthy and Lynn Boylan give an update on the upcoming Brexit referendum, TTIP, glyphosate and the Assembly elections.
