Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the result of yesterday’s Catalan election must be respected.
Speaking from Barcelona, where she was part of a delegation of MEP observers to the election, Martina Anderson said:
“Now that the people of Catalonia have had their say in a democratic election, their vote must be respected.
“A majority of people have endorsed pro-independence parties and candidates and the Spanish government must accept that.
“The fact that a number of candidates had to contest this election from prison or exile is an affront to democracy. They should be released immediately and all charges against them dropped.
“We now need to see a process of genuine and inclusive dialogue between the Spanish authorities and the pro-independence parties in Catalonia to give effect to the votes cast yesterday.”
