Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said it is hypocritical for James Brokenshire to talk about protecting the interests of the North as his government seeks to impose Brexit on the North..
Martina Anderson said:
“British Secretary of State James Brokenshire is in Brussels today to meet with senior EU figures on Brexit but he cannot continue to try to pull the wool over their eyes.
“He talks about protecting the interests of the north but in reality his government’s Brexit agenda can only damage those interests.
“James Brokesnshire’s party and their Brexit policy was rejected by the people of the North. He has no mandate in the EU on behalf of the people of the North.
“The majority of citizens here voted to remain in the EU. They did so to protect our agreements, economy and rights.
“It is particularly ironic that he will be meeting with the EU agriculture Commissioner as the Tory Brexit agenda will have devastating consequences for the agriculture sector, north and south.
“It’s long past the time that the British government listened to the EU negotiators and the citizens of the north and brought forward credible proposals which recognise the unique circumstances of the north of Ireland and deliver special status for the North within the EU.”
