She called on member states across the EU need to do more to address the humanitarian crisis of refugees fleeing conflict.

Ms Anderson said;

“More and more desperate refugees are fleeing conflict and persecution and are dying at the borders of the EU as they seek safety.

“We have all seen the scale and misery of the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean with countless people tragically losing their lives each year.

“A new UN report has said 2016 is set to be the deadliest year for refugees crossing the Mediterranean with almost 4,000 dying so far and that figure is set to rise.

“These are not just numbers; they are men, women, children and babies who have drowned.

“And more than 70,000 others are stranded at Europe’s borders, including children and young people at risk of horrific exploitation.

“Despite this, the Council of EU is committed to keeping them out rather than keeping them safe.

“Here in the North we have welcomed refugees with open arms and those who have made their home here add to the cultural diversity of our society.

“The EU needs to focus on the safety of refugees and individual member states need to do more to address this growing humanitarian crisis.”

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called on the European Union to do more to assist the Basque peace process.

Speaking at an event at the European Parliament in Brussels organised by the Basque Friendship Group, Ms Anderson said;

“Ten years ago in October 2006 a declaration of support for the Basque resolution process was adopted by the European Parliament.

“It called upon the European institutions to support the Basque peace process and play an active role in its resolution.

“Ten years on that resolution remains in place. However, the EU has not done as much as it could to advance the peace process in line with the declaration passed by the parliament.

“The Basque conflict is the last of its kind in the EU and there is an onus on the European institutions to play a role in helping to resolve it.”

“The majority of the people of the North clearly voted to remain in the EU and that vote needs to be recognised and respected.”
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said if the British Secretary of State wants to represent the best interests of the people of the North he should respect the vote to remain.
Ms Anderson said;
“New British Secretary of State James Brokenshire has said he is committed to representing the best interests of the people of the North.
“Well if he wants to see how the majority of people in the north think he need look no further than the results of the recent referendum when the majority clearly voted to remain in the EU.
“The best way he can represent their interests is to recognise and respect the democratically expressed views of the people.”

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the Irish government should challenge the Presidency of the Council of the European Union to respect the democratic mandate of the people of the North.rpk-tramplin

Ms Anderson said;

“The British government has now announced it is withdrawing from its planned presidency of the Council of the European Union which is due to begin in mid 2017.

“It is not yet clear who will replace them but whichever member state takes up the role they need to recognise and respect the democratic vote of the majority of people in the North to remain in the EU.

“The Irish government in particular has a role to play in engaging with both the existing and incoming presidencies to ensure the views of the people of the North are respected.

“We can’t allow the votes of people in England to dictate our future.”
