Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed the Irish government’s decision to back a Sinn Féin motion to recognise the state of Palestine.
Speaking after both houses of the Oireachtas backed a Sinn Féin motion to recognise Palestinian statehood, Ms Anderson said;
“I welcome the fact that both the Dáil and the Seanad have agreed to back Sinn Féin’s call to recognise the state of Palestine.
“Both houses have now agreed to support the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, to recognise the Palestinian state, and to endorse the right of the people of Palestine to independence and sovereignty.
“Ireland has now moved closer to joining a growing number of countries both in Europe and across the world who support the Palestinian people and recognise their statehood.
“While this is welcome, it has to be followed with meaningful action to demonstrate that support.
“I repeat my call on the Irish government to call an immediate end to the purchase of military equipment from Israeli arms firms.
“Diplomatically the Irish government must also bring pressure to bear on Israel to end its blockade of Gaza, halt its programme of illegal settlements, and its continued aggression towards the Palestinian people.”
