Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed a Dáil debate on recognition of the state of Palestine.
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s debate, Ms Anderson said;
“I welcome this timely motion from Sinn Féin calling on the Irish government to recognise the state of Palestine.
“135 countries around the world have already recognised Palestinian statehood.
“This includes eight EU member states, and most recently Sweden.
“This important issue was also debated at the November plenary of the European Parliament and I was proud to take part in that debate to call on the EU to recognise Palestine.
“I welcome the fact this will now be debated in Leinster House. I am calling on all parties in the Dáil to listen to the will of the Irish people, which was clearly demonstrated on the streets across Ireland recently, and to officially recognise the state of Palestine.
“Recognising Palestinian statehood would contribute to the momentum building across Europe in support of the Palestinian people.
“It would also increase pressure on Israel to engage meaningful in a process towards a must and peaceful two-state solution.”
