Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has urged the European Union to implement a United Nations resolution recognising a Palestinian refugee organisation.
Ms Anderson, the chair of the European Parliament’s delegation to the Palestinian Legislative Council, said;
“In January, the United Nations’ committee on NGOs called for the Palestinian Return Centre, an organisation which helps Palestinian refugees, to be granted consultative status at the UN’s Economic and Social Council.
“The Palestine Return Centre provides direct help to Palestinian refugees. Having this status at the UN would significantly benefit the organisation and, more importantly, allow it to provide greater protection to the rights of Palestinian refugees.
“The European Union, and its member states, should now implement the UN recommendation as a matter of urgency.
“Palestinian refugees are entitled to the support of the international community and the EU in particular has a key role to play in supporting their rights.”
