Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson will travel to Catalonia as an observer for the election there on Thursday.
Martina Anderson said:
“I will be in Barcelona later this week for the upcoming election in Catalonia alongside other MEPs as observers.
“I was also there for the independence referendum on October 1 and witnessed at first hand the brutal attack on democracy carried out by the Spanish authorities.
“Since then the Spanish authorities have continued their assault on democracy by detaining and charging Catalan elected representatives.
“This week’s election must be allowed to proceed unhindered and people must be allowed to exercise their vote free from fear or intimidation.
“As the people go to the polls in Catalonia this week it is vital that their vote be respected and recognised.”
