Anderson raises concerns over milk prices
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill’s intervention on behalf of dairy farmers who are concerned about milk prices.
Ms Anderson said;
“The current state of milk prices is a great concern to farmers working in the dairy industry.
“We are now in the position where it is costing more to produce milk than the farmers are getting paid.
“This is a result of a number of factors, including the Russian ban on agricultural imports and the increase in milk production within the EU and across the world.
“Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill has now written to Elizabeth Truss, the British secretary of state for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) over the concerns of the dairy industry to seek backing in discussions with the European Commission about EU support for the sector.
“I will also be lobbying the EU Commission on behalf of the dairy sector and will continue to campaign for a fair deal for our farmers and agricultural industry.”
