Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called for the release of Catalan elected representatives and activists jailed following the independence referendum.

Martina Anderson said:

“I and a delegation of other MEPs had hoped to visit imprisoned Catalan government ministers currently held in Spanish prisons following the independence referendum in Catalonia.

“We applied for the necessary permissions from the Spanish authorities to visit the ministers and other jailed elected representatives but to date they have refused to give us any confirmation.

“As a result we have been prevented from visiting the jailed ministers and representatives.

“The continued detention of these Catalan ministers and other elected representatives and other activists is an affront to democracy.

“They should be released immediately and all charges against them dropped.

“Instead of criminalisation, the Spanish authorities need to enter into meaningful dialogue with the Catalan government as a matter of urgency.”
