Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has praised Palestinian psychologist and UNICEF consultant Laila Atshan for her peacemaking efforts around the world.
Speaking after meeting Laila Atshan in Derry, Ms Anderson, the chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation to the Palestinian Legislative Council, said;
“Laila Atshan is an inspirational figure and it was an honour to meet her in Derry recently.
“Although born blind, Laila has achieved so much and dedicated her life to helping the Palestinian people and communities in conflict zones across the world.
“Born into a refugee family in Ramallah, Laila attended a missionary school in Jerusalem and later at the Bir Zet University, Rutgers State University. She most recently graduating from Harvard where she received their first Ford Fellowship and Lifetime Achievement Award.
“She is also a UNICEF consultant and independent evaluator for the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in the West Bank.
“As well as working in her native Palestine, Laila has also trained UNICEF staff in Darfur and Iraq in the promotion of human rights.
“Through all of her work Laila continues to be an inspiration to all of us interested in promoting human rights and justice for oppressed people throughout the world
