Welcoming the resolution of agreement between the EU and Norway in the European Parliament yesterday, Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson said:
“I welcome the resolution on mackerel in the north-east Atlantic and am relieved that this on-going saga has now been resolved.
“The failure to come to agreement for such a long time put both the sustainability of the stock and the fishing industry and coastal communities at risk.
“Obviously we cannot ignore the fact that migration patterns are changing, but the only way to resolve disagreements is through negotiation, not the threat of unilateral action on one hand, and sanctions on the other.
“The north east Atlantic is a shared resource and States that avail of it are obliged to cooperate with each other, sharing the burdens and the profits fairly.
“A lack of cooperation in this area would set a dangerous precedent and I am happy to see that all States in question have come to an agreement to ensure we sustain fish stocks for the future.”
