Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson met with the European Parliament’s Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt today to discuss special status for the north within the EU.
Speaking from Brussels, Martina Anderson said:
“I met today with Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament’s Brexit Co-ordinator in light of Monday’s developments in the Brexit negotiations.
“I impressed on him that this is about more than trade and the need for the Good Friday Agreement to be protected in all its parts, and also the need to protect citizens rights.
“I also reminded him that the majority of people in the north voted to remain and that the DUP do not represent this view.
“The best way to protect those rights and the Good Friday Agreement is for the north to secure special status within the EU, including remaining in the customs union and single market.
“These negotiations are still at a critical stage and unless the issues around Ireland, the border and citizens rights are addressed then the Taoiseach must be prepared to use his veto.”
