Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has met with EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager to discuss the RHI scandal.

Speaking from Strasbourg, Martina Anderson said:

“I met today with the EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager to discuss the RHI scandal.

“We discussed the steps the Commission will take to deal with the RHI scheme, particularly around reducing the cost to the public purse.

“The Commission has now approved changes to the RHI scheme, bringing in a lower tariff and placing a cap on operating hours.

“But this will only last until next March next year, and we still need a comprehensive plan to prevent the waste of public funds.

“Commissioner Vestager said that the Departments of the Economy and Finance should bring forward a comprehensive plan which she will work with in order to address this mess.

“I will continue to meet with the Commissioner and others to stop this drain on the public finances.”
