Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson is presently participating in a cross Party visit by an EU Delegation to the Palestinian Legislative Council (DPLC) to the West Bank and East Jerusalem, following the decision by Israeli authorities to refuse them permission to visit Gaza.
Martina Anderson said:
“Despite the obstructive decision by the Israeli authorities in preventing a humanitarian mission by elected members of the EU Parliament to the ravaged and impoverished Gaza our visit will proceed with a revised itinary.
“Although we will not be permitted to enter Gaza because of the Israeli blockade we arranged an alternative programme for East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
“We will meet with public representatives from throughout Palestine including Gaza, UN Agencies, civil society and NGOs to receive a comprehensive assessment of the current conditions in the Region.
“We will also be analysing political developments in the region including that of the Palestinian Prisoners being held in Israeli prisons. Our findings will inform our future voting patterns on issues concerning the region. We will present a report to the EU Parliament on our return.”
