Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has criticised Israel’s decision to withhold taxes from the Palestinian Authority after it applied to join the International Criminal Court.
Ms Anderson, the chair of the European Union’s delegation to the Palestinian Legislative Council, said;
“Following the decision of the Palestinian Authority to apply to join the International Criminal Court, Israel has now decided to withhold taxes from the Authority, which it collects on its behalf.
“This is a counterproductive move by Israel and will only serve to increase tensions in the region.
“The Palestinian Authority, as the elected representatives of the Palestinian people, has the right to join the International Criminal Court.
“Israel fears what the International Criminal Court will uncover about its actions during last year’s onslaught in Gaza and that’s what has prompted this retrograde step.
“This is yet another example of the Israelis attacking the Palestinian Authority for pursuing a political route to address the injustices faced by the Palestinian people.
“This money raised through taxes belongs to the Palestinian people and should be handed over immediately.”
