Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called for a European Parliament study into cyber bullying.
Ms Anderson said;
“The spread of modern technology has opened up the huge opportunities and possibilities of the internet to millions of young people.
“While this is an excellent educational and social resource, it can create real problems.
“Cyber bulling and online abuse is a growing problem across Europe, particularly for young people.
“It can have a devastating impact on the lives of young people and is just as cruel and real as more traditional forms of bullying.
“Often it happens behind closed doors and as a result is largely invisible but it can destroy people’s lives.
“We need to raise awareness of cyber bullying so that parents and guardians can be aware of the signs and talk to young people about their online activity.
“Social media companies and website provider also have a responsibility to ensure that users of their sites, particularly young people, are protected online.
“I am calling on the GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament to initiate a study into cyber bullying to shed more light on what can often be a hidden problem.”
