Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has backed a call for same sex marriages to be recognised by all European Union countries.
Ms Anderson said;
“In an interview this week the Vice President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans called for all EU states to recognise same sex marriages conducted abroad.
“Given the growing support for marriage equality across Europe, and the freedom of travel rights enjoyed by EU citizens, it is time that all member states recognised same sex marriages from other countries.
“It would be ludicrous for a couple to be legally married in one part of the EU and then have their rights denied and their marriage not recognised if they moved to another country.
“Equality should not stop at state borders and people’s rights should be respected everywhere.”
