Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson addressed the first conference of EH Bildu in Bilbao today and stressed the importance of building a broad-based party with strong links to local communities.
Speaking in Bilbao, Martina Anderson said:
“I was honoured to address the first EH Bildu conference alongside international representatives from Colombia, Kurdistan, Catalonia, Aragón and the Canaries.
“It is great to see a stronger, more united, vibrant left force in the Basque Country.
“It is a positive step forward in the fight against the neoliberal austerity agenda and for a left, democratic, and independent alternative.
“Building a strong party, based in the community, the people and social movements, is an important step towards fighting for freedom and justice.
“This is even more important in places like the Basque Country and Ireland, where we are both still struggling for national independence as well as social justice.
“I told the delegates that they can always rely on Sinn Fein to be a constant ally and friend to the Basque struggle and the Basque people.
“I hope that in the time ahead E H Bildu can seize the opportunity to represent and unite all the Basque people in a peaceful struggle for liberation, independence and social justice.”
